The Patrol division is divided into three eight hour shifts. Each shift is comprised of 14 men and women that are supervised by one Lieutenant and one Sergeant who are responsible for management of their shift.
They perform the following services:
- Make high level decisions regarding policies and procedures
- Verify the accuracy and completeness of police reports and information regarding incidents and arrests
- Generate and disseminate crucial information to patrol officers
- Resolve problems presented by civilians when called upon to do so
- Act as the liaisons with other local, county, state, or federal agencies requiring support.
The patrol officers, both men and women, are the first responders to all police and fire calls. They are the ones you are most likely to meet when calling for police assistance or you violate a law. The calls handled by the patrol division range from simply a stalled auto to a felony level crime in progress.
The village of Melrose Park is divided into six zones. These zones are patrolled twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Each officer is expected to be an integral part of reducing the crime rate in our village and protecting or being of assistance to all residents, visitors, people working in the village and those who pass through. Our patrol officers usually ride one to a squad car. Depending on the call, several marked squad cars may be on one scene. In many cases, reports are turned over to other specialized police divisions such as Investigations, Juvenile and Tactical. Additional departments such as Accident Investigations and Social Services can also be involved.
Many of our officers utilize ongoing education programs to become certified or current in many other aspects of the job not encountered in the patrol division. The Police Department typically receives and responds to 1,700 calls on a monthly basis.
The patrol division is the backbone of the police department and a crucial component in the proactive fight against crime in our community.
