Animal Control
Animal Control OfficerThe following excerpts from the Village of Melrose Park ordinances are provided as a guide to pet owners. In addition, the Cook County Animal Control Ordinance was adopted and incorporated into the Village of Melrose Park Code.

The Melrose Park Police Animal Control Officer is available to assist residents with domestic animal and wildlife issues. Information and referrals are provided as needed. Residents may leave voice ail messages for the animal control officer by calling the Melrose Park Police Department non emergency telephone number 708-344-8409, extension #109.

Though understanding and compliance with these ordinances, the people of the Village of Melrose Park hope to promote the safety and well being of animals and improve relations between animal owners and the general public.

Control of Animals(Chapter 75)

It shall be unlawful:

To permit any dog to run at large within the village. A dog will be deemed to be running at large when off the premises of the owner and not on a leash. The leash cannot be more than ten feet in length. (Chapter 75.1)

To permit any dog to run at large in any part of the village. Any dog running at large in the village shall be deemed a public nuisance and may be impounded. (Chapter 75.10)

To permit a dog to disturb the quiet of any person, by howling or barking. Said dog shall be deemed a nuisance and may be impounded. (Chapter 75.12)

To permit a dog to bite, scratch, or in any other manner, break the skin, of a person or animal shall be deemed a nuisance and may be impounded.

To harbor or keep any animal, which causes a nuisance by defecating or urinating upon any public street, sidewalk, or any other public place or upon any premises not owned or occupied by the person owning or keeping such animal. The owner of every animal within the village shall be responsible for the removal and sanitary disposal of that animal’s bodily waste product and excreta so as to maintain the owners’ premises and all and any other property in the village in a clean and sanitary condition. The owner, attendant, or other person in charge of any animal outside the premises to which the animal is licensed shall have on thi person a suitable and appropriate means for removal and sanitary disposal of that animal’s body waste product and excreta.

Animal Bites

All animal bites must be reported to the Melrose Park Police Department within twenty-four hours of occurrence A M.P.P.D. officer shall complete an animal bite report, and if known, give the bottom of the form to the owner of the biting animal. The owner is then to take the biting animal to the veterinarian for an examination. (Administrative Regulation to the Cook County Animal and Rabies Control Ordinance).

Vaccinations required

All animals four months or more of age, shall be inoculated against rabies with an approved rabies vaccine. (Chapter 75.3).

License required

All dogs owned, kept, maintained or harbored within the village shall be licensed. (Chapter 75.2).

License application

Applications for dog licenses are available at the village hall (Chapter 75.3)

License period and fee

Shall be from January 1st to December 31st of the following year. A dog license fee of ten dollars, for a two year license, is required for each dog owned. Proof of a current rabies vaccine must be presented with application. (Chapter 75.4)

Display of license

All dogs (even those having microchips), must display a current rabies and village tag when off their owners property. Microchip registration should always be updated with the current owners’ information. (Chapter 75.7).

Replacement Dog License Tag

Shall be issued to a licensee in the event the original tag is lost or stolen for a fee of fifty cents. (Chapter 75.8)
